2012: The Year Of Stuff.

This is a grab-all post. Everything in one, like a smörgåsbord.

STUFF THAT HAPPENED TO ME.

In April, THE TESTIMONY was published in hardback and digitally.

In December, THE EXPLORER was published digitally.

I have written three books this year: EXPLORER 2 (working title), K&R (working title) and AUS (working title). E2 is out this time next year; K&R is out Summer 2014; AUS is I really have no idea.

I have met some amazing people, too many to list here: but they are writers and teachers and friends, and it means a hell of a lot to have them in my life.

I have left one job, writing a Video Game when the game was unceremonsiously canned after three years and many millions because people don't understand markets; and I have started another, back in my main job-love, teaching at Roehampton University.

STUFF THAT I LIKED AT LEAST QUITE A BIT.

So, and in no particular order, and with the only condition being that it has to have been released in 2012 (and I'm sure I've missed a lot so please don't be offended if I know you and your thing isn't on here):

Music: Fiona Apple's THE IDLER WHEEL, Martin Rossiter's THE DEFENESTRATION OF ST. MARTIN, David Byrne & St Vincent's LOVE THIS GIANT, Hey Hello's HEY HELLO, Deftones' KOI NO YOKAN, Twin Shadow's CONFESS, Torche's HARMONICRAFT, Baroness' YELLOW & GREEN, Japandroid's CELEBRATION ROCK, Bat For Lashes' THE HAUNTED MAN, Sleigh Bells' REIGN OF TERROR, Baby Teeth's WHITE TONIGHT, Grizzly Bear's SHIELDS, Polica's GIVE YOU THE GHOST, Chromatics' KILL FOR LOVE, Divine Fits' A THING CALLED DIVINE FITS.

Books: Keith Ridgway's HAWTHORN & CHILD, Zadie Smith's NW, Adam Roberts' JACK GLASS, Tom Pollock's THE CITY'S SON, Alex Preston's THE REVELATIONS, Niven Govinden's BLACK BREAD WHITE BEER, Ben Marcus' THE FLAME ALPHABET, Mark Yarm's EVERYBODY LOVES OUR TOWN, Kim Curran's SHIFT, Adam Christopher's SEVEN WONDERS, Jennifer Egan's BLACK BOX (short), P.D Smith's CITY, Laurent Binet's HHhH, Margaret Atwood's I'M STARTED FOR YOU (short), Nick Harkaway's ANGELMAKER, Will Wiles' CARE OF WOODEN FLOORS, Hannah Berry's ADAMTINE, Matth Thorne's PRINCE.

Movies: LOOPER, THE AVENGERS, TREE OF LIFE, KILLER JOE, THE GREY, SAFETY NOT GUARANTEED, DREDD, ARGO, CABIN IN THE WOODS, THE HOBBIT, THE DARK KNIGHT RISES, LAWLESS.

STUFF TO LOOK FORWARD TO IN 2013.

For me personally and professionally, 2013 has lots to it.

I've got THE EXPLORER out in print in January, and a novel called THE MACHINE out in April. The latter of those is very different to the former: a very different style, tonally, than my previous two novels. Every novel, I try to push myself as far as I can. That is, as I frequently say to anybody who will listen, the only way you get better at this, and I want to get better. We'll see.

I've got two novels to write for HarperCollins, but more on those another day.

I've got a TV thing I'm writing with an amazing writer and a comic thing I am going to do with yet another amazing writer and artist, but more on those another day as well.

I'm also acting in this thing and I am releasing an album and -- only joking.

I've read some stuff that's coming out in 2013. Sam Byer's IDIOPATHY, Nicholas Royle's FIRST NOVEL, Amy McCulloch's THE OATHBREAKER'S SHADOW, Lauren Beukes' THE SHINING GIRLS: all are, quite literally, top of their field stuff. And there's so much more that I'm looking forward to.

It's going to be a hell of a year.

One last thing. I dont' know if anybody reads this, or if this is shouting into the darkness, but I just want to thank everybody who has bought my books, or who helped get them onto the shelves. Really, it was the culmination of an entire lifetime of dreams, and this has been the best year of my life. So, if you're reading this and you are somebody that I should thank, please know this: I am hugely grateful for everything. Thanks, and there's a very good chance that I love you a little bit.
